Description
Ripstop Canvas fabric combines acrylic-treated polyester with a reinforcing weaving technique. This technique increases the material’s resistance to tearing and ripping. Manufacturers commonly use ripstop canvas for outdoor applications such as blinds, tents, and tented camps. Its strength also makes it ideal for canopy covers and tarpaulins.
The square grid pattern, the most common weave in ripstop fabric, incorporates thicker threads at regular intervals to form a grid-like structure. This pattern effectively prevents tears from spreading, giving the fabric its signature tear resistance.
Polyester ripstop fabric offers excellent water and UV resistance, making it a popular choice for outdoor applications exposed to the elements. It is also highly resistant to wrinkles, mildew, and abrasion.
Ripstop found its way into all sorts of gear, such as tents, backpacks, even parachutes – and the suits jumpers wore on the way down. Today, you can find ripstop materials all over, from jackets and pants to hammocks and hot air balloons. Just about anywhere that a tear would be bad, ripstop can help prevent the problem from getting worse. Look around and you’re likely to find ripstop materials in places you never imagined.
